The name is a pun on y ajin (野人) which means "wildman", and an anagram of yasai (野菜) which means "vegetable". 6.5 Artificially Created Partial Saiyans.Goku is a character defined by breaking his limits, and for the first time, Battle of Gods suggests there might be some limits even he can’t overcome, a surprisingly mature stance for Dragon Ball to take. It’s a remarkable display of vulnerability from a character who usually stands as an aspirational figure for fans across the world for his refusal to give up in the face of adversity. The only other time he surrendered, against Cell, was because he was confident Gohan would beat him instead, but here Goku is the last line of defense against Beerus. Goku may have lost to opponents before, but there was always a guarantee that he would get stronger and find a way to win by the arc’s end. Easy power-ups were a common occurrence in the original run, from Goku drinking the Ultra Divine Water, to the Namekian Elder unleashing various characters’ potential, to Gohan’s Ultimate form being granted by the Elder Kai’s ritual. It’s rare for a Dragon Ball story to grant Goku such interiority, and self-reflect on the way Dragon Ball sometimes let its own themes down. Despite gaining this newfound power, Goku isn’t satisfied - it’s one he feels he hasn’t earned, due to gaining it from a ceremony rather than training, and he vents his frustrations as he battles with Beerus. Said gamble pays off when Goku finally goes toe to toe with Beerus, and the discrepancy in the design makes its divine power all the more awe-inspiring. The idea that what was intended to be the final Super Saiyan form would make Goku look weaker was a huge gamble, but one right in line with Toriyama’s design philosophy of making characters' last forms the most unassuming, such as with Frieza’s final form or Kid Buu.
